Respiratory infection is one of the most common conditions in pigeons, especially racing pigeons during the racing season. Therefore, this leads to poor performance and loss of a race if pigeons have a respiratory infection. All birds are susceptible to such infection, yet due to a weak immune system in young birds, there are more cases with such ages than adult pigeons.

What factors lead to respiratory infection in pigeons? 

There are several reasons why such infection could happen:
  • First, it can be caused due to different types of bacteria, such as Mycoplasma and Chlamydia.
  • Second, environmental conditions, such as dampness, poor hygiene in the living area (loft), or having too many pigeons in a small loft.
  • Third, having concurrent health problems, such as cocci or canker that have already impacted the immune system. Canker itself can cause breathing problems, leading to higher chances of having respiratory infection.
  • Fourth, having a poor, unbalanced nutritional diet

What is Chlamydia, chlamydia symptoms, and chlamydia treatment? 

Chlamydia is a gram-negative pathogen, which is an obligate pathogen, and it can only divide inside the cells of its host. It is also known as avian chlamydiosis or as psittacosis. Chlamydia can affect several types of birds, such as poultry like backyard chickens, or other types of birds like pigeons, doves, or cage birds like finches..etc. Chlamydia infection is a contagious condition and could spread among birds.
The symptoms of Chlamydia present in birds are the following: 
  • Gastrointestinal signs: This can be noticed from the bird dropping with the presence of lime-green or yellow-green, watery droppings.
  • Respiratory signs: Discharge of the eyes or bird’s nostrils, and birds may present with difficulty breathing and having their mouth open to help breath. Moreover, general signs of sickness could be present as well, such as inactivity, weight loss, or weakness in the birds.
Doxycycline for birds is a broad-spectrum antibiotic for Chlamydia. Bird antibiotics doxycycline is an effective treatment, and it comes in different forms, such as doxycycline bird tablet or as doxycycline powder.
